Are Locking Pins Needed on Pallet Racking?

When setting up pallet racking systems, customers often ask about the purpose of the ‘clips’ or ‘pins’ that join the connector on the beam to the front face of the upright frame. The primary function of the locking pin (or beam lock) is to prevent accidental movement of pallet racking beams by the forklift truck. Locking pins are small but essential components that secure your beams, preventing unintended disassembly and improving safety. Let’s delve into why locking pins are so important.

The locking pin is a small yet strong device that locks the pallet racking beams in position.  These locking pins are designed to meet industry standards set by organisations like the Storage Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (SEMA). They are specifically designed to prevent the beam from dislodging when knocked from underneath, but also to break in the event of a more serious impact when an excessive amount of pressure is applied. This can result in limiting the damage of a localised accident to a few pallets rather than a more serious full pallet racking collapse. 

We often see nuts and bolts being used as an alternative (or in addition) to the beam locks supplied by the manufacturer. These should never be used as they are not designed to break under the same pressure. This could result in the collapse of your whole pallet racking run. If the beam does not dislodge the result will be to destroy the upright in the area of the beam connector which can result in a whole upright buckling and collapsing which in turn results in all the beams in that bay falling and rotating against the next upright down the aisle causing this to also collapse and so on. The ultimate result could be a chain reaction collapse along a full run of racking which can be catastrophic and very costly to replace.

Dexion pallet racking comes in a wide variety of sizes, so if you are adding to your existing warehouse racking, it is important to make sure that you get compatible materials. Unlike many other racking systems, you will still find a lot of Dexion in imperial sizes, so beams at 1372mm (4ft 6in), 2667mm (8ft 9in) and 3048mm (10ft), as well as standard metric sizes, are often found on the used market. The measurement used to describe a beam’s size is the clear entry- the space between the upright frames when beams are in place, so please check carefully before placing an order.

Upright frames may also differ from standard 900mm and 1100mm depths, with 914mm (3ft) and 1067mm (3ft 6in) often used for Dexion frames, so again please confirm the required size. We can cut or splice frames to almost any size, so please let us know the exact height you need and we will quote accordingly.

Dexion of often used as a generic term for pallet racking, when in fact there are many different manufacturers available and almost none of them are compatible with each other. Therefore it is important that we know what racking system you have if you are looking to add to it. Used Link 51 pallet racking is always a popular warehouse racking system and we have large quantities of great quality used materials in stock at the moment.

Upright frames are up to 10,000mm high and can be braced to either 900mm or 1100mm (or other sizes on request) as required. All our used frames are supplied assembled and with footplates attached.

Heavy duty warehouse shelving, or longspan shelving as it is often known, is a scaled down version of pallet racking used for storing non-palletised goods. It has the upright frames and horizontal beams of pallet racking, but the beams are a z-profile to support a chipboard shelf.

We have large quantities of our QuickSpan shelving system in stock, available for fast dispatch in a wide range of sizes.

The upright frames are 2000mm to 5000mm and can be braced at depths from 400mm to 1200mm. All frames are supplied assembled, with footplates attached and including fixing bolts and shims.

Beams come in sizes from 950mm to 2700mm and are supplied with beam locks. We have chipboard decks and support bars to suit all sizes of shelving. Dropover steel shelves are also available for this shelving system.

The beam height can be adjusted every 50mm on the frames and the load capacity is up to 1075kg UDL per shelf. This makes for a very versatile and fully adjustable hand loaded shelving system suitable for all warehouse and industrial environments.
