Used Dexion racking is something we are often asked for and it’s not always what the customer actually needs. In the same way that Hoover, Sellotape or Velcro are used to describe a wide variety of products from many different manufacturers, so Dexion is just one of twenty or more types of pallet racking currently available in the UK. 

Unfortunately, asking for the blue and orange racking doesn’t narrow it down a lot, as blue frames and orange beams are common to a number of warehouse racking systems and most can be supplied in a variety of colours on request.

If you need industrial racking to replace components or to add to your existing racking, then you need to be sure that you get compatible parts. Many pallet racking manufacturers stamp their name on the uprights (Dexion, Apex, Redirack, Link 51 etc), but if you can’t see it on your racking there are other ways to make sure you order the correct pallet racking system.

What is a pallet racking bay?

A pallet racking bay is two upright frames joined together with pairs of horizontal beams to create levels on which pallets can be stored. You should always have runs of at least two bays joined together, with at least two beam levels in each bay, for stability and for the manufacturer’s stated load capacities to be valid.

Upright frames are made up of two legs braced together and with footplates attached. Standard depths are 900mm and 1100mm and they can be any height from two metres to fifteen metres (and beyond). Horizontal beams start from 950mm long and are available in a wide variety of sizes, sometimes over 4000mm in length. 2700mm is the most common warehouse racking beam length, but 1350mm, 2250mm and 3300mm are also widely used. The load capacity of the beams ranges from a few hundred kilos to at least three tonnes for a uniformly distributed load (UDL).

All frame heights are usually in stock because we tend to buy frames at 8, 9 or 10 metres high which can then be cut to exact height depending on customer requests. We can also splice smaller frames together to create taller frames when required. This actually strengthens the frame and usually doesn’t affect where beam levels can be located. We keep bracing for standard 900mm and 1100mm frame depths in stock, but we can often make bracing for bespoke sizes on request.
